Feeding babies whenever and wherever they are hungry is an essential and normal part of parenting. Unfortunately, some individuals still stigmatize breastfeeding in public, pressuring mothers to use covers. In 2018, Melanie Dudley, a Texas mother with a 3-month-old baby, faced such a situation at a restaurant.
While dining with family and friends, Melanie began breastfeeding her son when he cried for food. Despite general acceptance, a stranger at a nearby table expressed discomfort with Melanie not using a cover. Politely asked to cover up, Melanie complied but with a humorous twist.
During a vacation in Cabo San Lucas, she had the cover on but found it uncomfortably hot due to the 95-degree weather. Melanie decided to take it off, placing it on her head instead. Her unexpected response garnered laughter from the entire restaurant.
Reflecting on the incident, Melanie shared, “I don’t know why. It wasn’t like a salacious fight or anything. That was just my response. I had no words, so I thought, I’ll just cover my head instead.”
Witnessing the amusing moment, Carol Lockwood took a photo of Melanie and posted it online, praising her for standing up against breastfeeding shaming. The photo went viral, receiving widespread support and over 225,000 shares.
Many people rallied behind Melanie, highlighting the belief that breastfeeding is a natural and normal part of motherhood. Mothers should not feel ashamed or judged for nourishing their babies in public.
